Google Merchant Center and Shopify: the three verification failures

Connecting the app is the easy part. These are the three reasons verification stalls, in the order they usually occur.

Failure 1 — the claim doesn't match the domain

Merchant Center wants to verify the domain you're actually serving. If the store is on a custom domain but the claim was made with the myshopify.com URL, or vice versa, verification loops forever. Claim the exact domain that appears in the checkout.

Failure 2 — the product feed sends the wrong URL

After connecting, the feed can point at the myshopify.com product URLs rather than the custom domain. Google then treats them as a different site from the one you verified. Check the link attribute in the feed, not just the store settings.

Failure 3 — missing identifiers

Products without GTIN or brand get disapproved as 'limited performance'. Own-brand products qualify for an exemption, but you have to request it per brand in Merchant Center — it isn't automatic.

What this costs

Free listings are the cheapest traffic a Shopify store has, and a stalled verification can sit unnoticed for weeks. It's worth one hour of checking rather than waiting for Google to email you.

The scan won't fix Merchant Center, but it reports whether your product data is readable on the page itself — the same data Google uses.
